Nicholas’ Story

I help patients process situations and work through them to find a way to manage or solve their issues. Today, an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I acquired the skill when I was young, as even then, I enjoyed talking to individuals and helping them. That was the motivation that led me to social work and nursing later.

I work with individuals suffering with anxiety, depression, irritability, impulsivity, and stress among other symptoms. My primary goal is to help people improve their functioning, learn better ways to manage situations, and find outlets that help them cope with their illness or condition.

“When people reach out to us, they want help. They want to find ways of either making the symptoms go away or at the very least make the symptoms more manageable.”

Education, empathy, and exploring a client's symptoms are the attributes and process I use to encourage individuals to open up. “Many patients are unaware of what their symptoms mean and how they are treated. That’s why it’s important for them to understand at a general level what happens in the body and why and how it affects their overall mood.”

I see the benefits of therapy with the younger population. With children, the rule of thumb is therapy first. When medicine is necessary, I educate the individual on what to expect with the medication and how change is expected to occur.

My understanding and compassion enable me to support and motivate patients. “Every person is different, and I go where the patient is every time. I will do everything I can to help people find the way to improve their lives.”
